Anything about Gandhiji from the memory of a person associated with him would be valuable. Shri M.N. Karassery has done yeoman service by providing us with the memoirs orally obtained from a secretary of the Mahatma, Shri Venkataram Kalyanam in his very old age. The fact that this related to the last period of
Gandhiji’s life – his heroic hour, when he boldly confronted the mass murderers of India’s communal
holocaust of 1945-47, gives special value to the memoirs now brought before us. I hope the work now translated from Malayalam into English, gets the widest possible readership; it has a profound message for all of us in these critical times. – Prof. Irfan Habib
